Diabetic Footcare
Diabetes and Footcare
Diabetes can result in damage to the central nervous system which can mean that patients may not feel pain when they have hurt themselves as they may not even realise they are injured, especially if the injury is to the sole of the foot or between the toes. This condition is known as peripheral neuropathy and can lead to serious damage for people with diabetes. For this reason, foot care is of even greater importance to diabetic clients.
Treatment
Diabetic patients need to have their feet checked on a daily basis in order to identify any problems in a timely manner. The feet need to be checked for cuts, scratches, ulcer, dry skin, blisters, corns, calluses, itchy or red skin between the toes, discolouration of the skin and any redness or warm areas. Total Foot Repair offer every diabetic patient a check of the foot pulses and monofilament testing at every appointment. All of the creams used are suitable for diabetic patients.
What is Monofilament testing?
A monofilament test is done to test for nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy), which can be caused by diabetes. The monofilament is a small strand of nylon attached to a plastic base. We use this monofilament to check for loss of feeling on your foot.
