What causes Athlete’s Foot?

Tinea Pedis (Athlete’s Foot) is a very contagious fungal skin infection most commonly affecting the feet.  It is caused by dermatophytes, a group of fungi that thrive in warm, moist environments, such as locker rooms, public showers, and inside shoes.

What does Athlete’s Foot look like?

Athlete’s Foot can appear as dry, red, cracked skin that may start to peel. However, it can also cause blisters and maceration of the skin causing burning and itching. It is usually found between the toes or on the soles of the feet.

What is the treatment for Athlete’s Foot?

At Total Foot Repair we advise the daily use of Mykored which is available in a pipette or a spray. Other over-the-counter antifungal medications include:

Clotrimazole

Miconazole

Terbinafine

For more severe infections prescription strength treatments may be needed.

Can Athlete’s Foot spread?

Yes, it spreads easily by having direct contact with someone, walking barefoot in communal areas such as public swimming pools or by continuous wear of poorly ventilated shoes and socks.

How can I prevent myself from getting Athlete’s Foot?

Make sure that if your feet become sweaty or damp you wash and dry your feet as soon as possible.

Try to keep your feet dry – make sure you dry carefully between the toes after washing.

Avoid walking in communal areas.

Avoid sharing footwear or towels.

Wear breathable footwear.

If you do have Athlete’s Foot, disinfect your shoes and floors. Anti fungal powders or sprays are available for this.
